Kiwi the Parrot: What a Diet Change Can Do

Kiwi came in for a routine beak and nail check. A simple change in diet turned out to be the most important part of the visit.

Kiwi the Parrot

Kiwi, a cheerful little parrot, visited us for a routine beak and nail trim. During the check-up we noticed he was slightly overweight and that his feathers looked dull — common signs of an all-seed diet.

Seeds are tasty but high in fat and low in vitamins. Together with his owner, we planned a gradual switch to quality pellets, fresh vegetables and a small amount of fruit, with seeds kept only as treats.

A few weeks later Kiwi had reached a healthy weight and his feathers were glossy again. Birds, rabbits and reptiles have very specific needs: if you share your home with an exotic pet, we’re happy to review its diet and housing with you.
